October Moments: Lake Pupuke, Mangawhai Memories, and Artful Adventures in Helensville

A Beautiful Walk Around Lake Pupuke

October kicked off with a rejuvenating walk around Lake Pupuke in Takapuna. With its mirror-like waters reflecting the crisp blue sky and lush trees, the lake offers a tranquil escape right in the heart of the North Shore. The walking track is lined with native flora, which was especially vibrant with spring life, adding a burst of colour at every turn. I paused a few times to take in the view, as I grew up on the Shores of Lake Pupuke, I reflected on the distant volcanic cones, childhood memories, and beachside escapades. I enjoyed watching local birdlife skim over the water, and the swans with their baby cygnets . If you’re ever near Takapuna, I recommend this peaceful escape to recharge your spirit.

A Weekend to Remember in Mangawhai

This October marked a deeply personal anniversary—the 20th year since our Mum passed away. To honour her memory, I took a weekend trip with two of my sisters to Mangawhai, a quaint coastal town that feels like a step back in time with its charm and warmth.

Our first stop, we explored a few local markets, each bustling with friendly vendors and handmade goods that showcased the artistic heart of the Mangawhai community. That evening, we had dinner at the local bowling club—a laid-back, friendly spot filled with locals and an inviting sense of community. The night ended on a perfect note with a cozy movie night in a charming little church, watching Mr. Blake at Your Service. The atmosphere was so special, as though the church walls themselves held onto decades of stories, adding a certain nostalgia to the experience.

Later we explored Mangawhai Heads Beach, a sweeping shoreline with wild waves crashing against rocky outcrops, reminding me of nature's raw beauty. We strolled along the sandy stretch, sharing memories and finding peace in the gentle rhythm of the ocean.

Art in the Ville: Celebrating Creativity in Helensville

Toward the end of the month, Kani and I spent two of the three delightful days at the “Arts in the Ville” festival in Helensville, only a short drive from A Deer Cottage, our bed and breakfast in Kaukapakapa. Helensville itself is a hidden gem, with its close-knit community and artistic spirit shining through each event. The festival showcased an array of local artists, from painters and potters to weavers and glassmakers, including the work of renowned artist Jeff Thomson, Corrugated Iron Man of Australasia. Known for his imaginative use of corrugated iron, Thomson’s artwork added an iconic Kiwi touch to the event, celebrating New Zealand's connection to this everyday material.

Beyond Arts in the Ville, which is an annual celebration, Helensville keeps the artistic spirit alive through the warmer months with the Helensville Art Trail. Held on the third Sunday of each month from November to May, the Art Trail invites visitors to explore studios and exhibitions around town, giving art lovers a chance to meet the artists and see their work in progress. This recurring event adds a wonderful dimension to Helensville’s community, making it a lively destination for art throughout the summer.
